At MadiroEdu, we are deeply committed to supporting the emotional and mental wellbeing of migrant women and youth across the Schengen Zone. On 1 August 2025, we hosted a powerful virtual psychosocial support session in response to the tragic loss of a young woman in our community.
Over 30 women, most of them youth, attended the session to grieve, reflect, and talk openly about their experiences navigating life in the diaspora. The session created a safe, culturally sensitive space where participants could share their struggles and feel heard.
Key Takeaways from the Session:
Many youth feel isolated and unsupported, often silenced by stigma or fear of being labelled.
The challenges of diaspora life including disconnection, pressure, and lack of familiar support systems are often underestimated.
Some young people admitted to underestimating the power of community, believing they must manage everything on their own.
Others reflected on how distance from home can lead to a false sense of freedom, resulting in riskier decisions without guidance or accountability.
Our Response:
To address these realities, MadiroEdu is encouraging:
A buddying system where youth can regularly check in with one another
Identifying a trusted “mother figure” or mentor within the community
Promoting culturally safe spaces for mental health dialogue and support
Emphasizing the message: you are not alone
This session reaffirmed our belief that community-led healing is both powerful and necessary. When we come together, we create room for growth, resilience, and hope.
